The Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Viet Nam in WTO documents), which became
the 150th member country of the WTO in January 2007, made use of the Organization’s
official dispute settlement procedure for the first time, by requesting the
consultations over the anti-dumping duty (25 per cent), levied by the US on imports
of Vietnamese shrimp .
If the consultations between the parties fail to resolve the issue after 60
days, Vietnam may request the WTO to establish an expert panel to consider the
complaint .
Up to the present case, Vietnam has never been a party in WTO proceedings
as a complainant – the country had only previously been a third party
in three disputes – or a defendant.
